The kit includes:

  • 1 x Conductivity Star

Find out which metal conducts heat best by placing a small amount of wax at the tip of each rod and heating from beneath in the centre using a tea light candle (not included).  Includes a small block of wax and rods of aluminium bronze, steel, nickel & copper.

  • 1 x Thermal Conductivity of Metals Apparatus

Comprising bars of copper, iron, aluminium and brass with nominal thermal conductivities of 395, 72, 240 and 128 Wm-1K-1 respectively, each 80mm x 20mm x 1.5mm, provided with a hollow for wax and mounted on a wooden ring.

  • 1 x Ball and Ring Apparatus

Ball and Ring apparatus for demonstrating thermal expansion. The ball will not pass through the ring if it is hot and the ring is cold, but it will pass if both are hot or both are cold.

  • 1 x Bi-metallic Strip

For demonstrating the differential expansion of 2 metals by the curvature produced when the strip is heated in a Bunsen flame. Comprises strips of brass and steel, each 200mm x 15mm, riveted together and mounted on a wooden handle.

  • Key Stage 3 - 4 Physics: Heat and Radiation: Thermal expansion

Conductivity Star:

  • Mount the handle in a retort stand and position so that the centre of the apparatus is over the flame from a tea light.
  • Vaseline also works as an alternative to wax.
  • A drawing pin or similar could be attached to the end of each rod using vaseline or wax and this gives an audible indication of when the rods are heated.

Thermal Conductivity of Metals Apparatus:

  • Place apparatus on a heatproof mat and heat from underneath using a tealight.
